Teacher Profile: Matthew Weiner
New America College is lucky to have wonderful teachers. In order to help you get to know them we will be sharing their profiles on our blog.
Tell Us About You
I’m from Santa Barbara, California. I moved to Denver in the summer of 2019. I enjoy reading, particularly history books and historical fiction, and spending time with my lovely family. My favorite food is probably burritos. Recently I have been eating a lot of pupusas though. They are a traditional Salvadoran food that is very hearty and delicious. A fun fact about me is that I’ve never eaten a hamburger as I was raised vegetarian.
Why Teach English?
I enjoy getting to know students from all over the world with different backgrounds, personalities and motivations. Facilitating students learning and watching them connect with each other in class, become friends and learn about each other’s cultures is very rewarding. I feel very fortunate to have seen so many beautiful friendships form and students grow as people – as well as English speakers – in my time as a teacher.
I have been teaching English for more than a decade, including abroad. I taught in Japan for years, in Osaka and Yokohama. I also taught for a short time in South Korea. Upon returning to the U.S. I taught in California until finally ending up at NAC!
Favorite Things About Colorado
I love the natural beauty of Colorado and that there are many possibilities for day trips in the Denver area. Also, I like the fact that we are not far from a bunch of different states that I have never been to, and I am looking forward to traveling to new states!
I don’t have a specific favorite place in Denver yet. I go to parks a lot with my family. I appreciate the abundance of nice parks in Denver!
