What is an F1 Visa?

An F1 visa is for international students who want to study full-time in the United States. Students may apply to study at any accredited college, university, seminary, conservatory, academic high school or language training program. In this blog we answer some basic questions about the F1 Visa. If you think an F1 Visa would be the best option for you, but you have questions, we are happy to talk it through with you!

What Does and F1 Visa Do?

The F-1 visa is for students who join academic programs or language courses. To get the F-1 visa, you must be accepted into a U.S. school or college that is approved by the government. Once accepted, the institution will issue a 1-20. An 1-20 is a document certifying a student meets the requirements of the F-1 Visa and has been admitted to a full-time program.

Does NAC Accept F1 Visa Students?

Yes! NAC is an accredited language training program located in Colorado, so we can accept F1 students and issue I-20s. F1 Visas and New America College (NAC) are a great duo! If you are interested in attending university or post-graduate studies in the United States but do not feel your English is strong enough, NAC would be an excellent first step.

Who Can Get an F1 Visa?

To apply for an F-1 visa, you must meet three requirements:

  1. You need to be accepted by a school that is approved, (accredited), by the U.S. government. (That’s NAC! NAC will send you the I-20 after accepting you. Click here for how to apply.)
  2. You must show that you have enough money to pay for your school, living expenses and other costs while you are in the U.S.
  3. You need to prove that you plan to return home after your studies. This can be shown by family ties, property or a job in your home country.

What Are the Benefits of an F1 Visa?

The F-1 visa offers several benefits for students:

  1. The F-1 visa lets you study full-time at a U.S. school or university.
  2. Studying in the U.S. gives you the chance to experience American culture, improve your English, and make friends from around the world.
  3. While options the first year are limited, you are able to work while on an F1 Visa.

How to Apply for an F1 Visa

  1. Receive your I-20 Form: After you are accepted at NAC,, we will email you the I-20 and acceptance letter to begin your visa application.
  2. Pay the SEVIS fee: SEVIS is a system that tracks international students in the U.S. You need to pay this fee before your visa interview.
  3. Complete the DS-160 Form: The DS-160 is an online form you must fill out to apply for the visa. Once you complete the form you will get a confirmation page for your visa interview.
  4. Schedule a Visa Interview: Book an appointment for an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate near you. As part of the interview, your fingerprints and a photo will also be taken.
  5. Attend the Interview: At the interview, you will answer questions about your studies, financial situation, and your plans after you finish school. Once approved, you will receive the F-1 visa and your adventure begins!
